The Studio Gallery has featured numerous guest artists over the years, and is currently showing the works of Marquette wood sculptor Mark Mitchell and Marquette non-traditional photographer Diane Jarvi.
Diane Jarvi calls herself a “Tradigital” artist. Diane has been a photographer and printmaker for over 30 years. For the past 10 years she has experimented with digital technology. She coined the term tradigital to describe her most recent work, which is a hybrid of traditional and digital techniques. Tradigital techniques include images on traditional silver-based photographic film that are scanned and manipulated digitally and printed with an inkjet printer onto metal (such as copper) or gel transfer media. Some pieces begin as digital photographs, are converted to digital negatives and then printed using traditional photographic or printmaking materials.
Diane’s work has been exhibited both locally and nationally. She is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the School of Art & Design at Northern Michigan University. She has been an educator since 1996 working with children, adults and college students. |
Mark Mitchell is a Marquette sculptor working in carved and assembled wood. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in Detroit, and his Master of Fine Arts from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills. His sculptures are comprised of recycled and waste wood, using both hard and soft woods. Despite the use of the rough materials, the finished sculptures are refined and pleasing. Most of the artworks are small and are suitable to most home décor.
Born in Marquette, Diane grew up in Lansing and the suburbs of Kansas City. She lived in New Jersey, close to NYC, for 15 years. Diane earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University in 2001. In 2004 she heeded the call of Lake Superior and returned to Marquette. Her work is greatly influenced by the landscapes and cultures of the Upper Peninsula.
